Closing Down your Small Water Features

For those who have small water features and spitters and need some tips on how to close those down for the winter, look no further! This article is what you need to prepare for a worry and maintenance free season and an easy set up for spring.

The first step you’d want to take is clean the fountain and basin by simply using a pressure washer or deep clean with a scrub brush and light soap to clean off any algae that’s grown over the season. Next you’d want to take your pump out of the housing, AquaBasin, or any basin it’s sitting in so it won’t freeze and possibly break your pump. Simply unplug the pump, pull the pump out and disconnect the hose going into the back of the spitter or fountain. Take apart the pump and wash all the insides including the impeller. Make sure you check for any excess wear or cracks on the parts of the pump before you put it back together. Once the cleaning is done and everything is correctly assembled, store in a dry place that wont freeze such as a garage or storage room/unit. Bronze and stone spitters and fountains can remain outside but it is a good idea to take in resin, plastic, and ceramic water features. There is no need to empty any left over water in your basin, you can leave it there until spring when it’s time to clean everything out to reassemble your feature.
