Moss in its many forms can be found in every corner of the planet. Aquatic moss was one of the first plants to evolve its way out of the water. This beauty is a descendent of your not so loved algae. Moss is rootless and absorbs water from the air, dew and surroundings. The type of moss that works around a pond is rock cap moss found as a native in the woods of Connecticut. This moss loves the shade but is sun tolerant. The pond loving moss can be found covering rocks in moist places in the wood and easily peels off. It is easy to know you have found the right kind because each tiny piece looks like a small fern. Pond moss can be dark or bright green depending on conditions. If you find some, go ahead and plant it around the pond by placing it in the cracks of the rocks or right on top of stones. One key thing you need to remember is that one corner of the moss must touch the water so the rest can soak it up. Waterfalls are an ideal place for moss. Your Koi will enjoy nibbling the ends in the water and you will enjoy how nicely it naturalizes the look of your pond.
